Hit and Miss

Thsi game doesn't have much going for it to be honest. I've looked and we've apparently looking for differences in the play buttons. That rules out the ones that you've reversed and changed the letter order on.

I notice that it doesn't exclude the buttons that you've orientated differently - I succeeded on a level with a button that wasn't straight, which really does mean that it's left to chance.

Meh, i coulda made it better.

Oh well.

Needs a little extra

The one thing that I can see this game requiring is a chance to see what is going on with the cat. All we can see is the ground moving and a very small window of it, relatively speaking.

Why not show us the cat flying through the air and gaining various power ups from that part of the game - baloons, jet boosts etc. Maybe have him fly through the engine of an aeroplane, to spectacularly end his challenge?

The mechanics of the game work well and the dual scoring system is a complete triumph. Height as well as length works well for a scoring system of this magnitude. Perhaps a score for objects hit? Losing points for bouncing off the floor and gaining points for hitting the dynamite and the springs?

Thanks for you comments, Coop. Those are some great ideas. I will keep those in mind for my next game... maybe a 'sequel'? :) Thanks for the kind words. I like the idea of going up. Excellent insights and input. Thanks again.

Good tutorial - lacks ethics.

Ok, so this is a dent set up for a tutorial. The tune as used in the Bytesize animations on the front page keeps it in time with Newgrounds itself. The images you used are good, but when it comes to the ethics of the process, you're a complete dick.

Trust me, my friend. NEVER tell people how to vote on this website. Star Syndicate flash do pass quite often, as do Clock Crew and Lock Legion, but that is still no excuse to go randomly hitting the '2' button for, is it?!

People must vote on the flash movie otr game what they think it deserved. Bollocks to the points that they can get, they need to come on this site and boost up the scores of the flash they enjoy and lower the ones that they didn't. Judgement is an essential part of this.

You might have come up with a system that works for you, but you should still watch the movie first. That would be like me leaving a review for this without flicking through to see what sort of trash you have talked here.

I'm surprised that you didn't try to say "The Lucky 7 Crew's flash always pass, so vote 2 on them and get the free save - that would have been taking it too far though.

Read the comments. I always watch it first.

Interface Issues

I'm not entirely sure of how this game got to be where it is with such an interface for the main game. It took me quite a while to figure out the controls (Keyboard would have been better, rather than point & click, in my opinion)

The Pool table was good, but the cue ball ran on for too long, so it needs a little tweak to get that sorted. The Guitar Hero part didn't translate too well to a dsektop computer, because you don't have the guitar, which makes those sort of games. You did some decent work on the dressup, which had minor issues with whatever the hell you used to obscure 'sensitive material'. Also, WTF was the icon to burn her all about? I like hot women, but that's taking it a little far, don't you think.

Is it possible to leave the pub? I couldn't, but that may have been down to my interface issues, as described earlier. Keeping score was a little basic, as it looked like a very basic font to tally with. Maybe adding a quick tutorial would help matters, so that you can deal with peopel like me who don't realise how to play the game?

The graphics were the main feature that gave you the high score. Work on the playability and some better sounds (Background music needs to be mutable) to unlock the other three stars.

Awesome game

Well, the sanity of Tom has gone completely down the tubes, although I've never seen any notes on his userpage about the eye lazers that he seems to have spontaneously evolved.

The way that you can gain experience is great for this game, though I would like to see further levels introduced, maybe chasing after other creatures of doom in this apocalyptic tale of hairy woe.

I like the way that you can level up by whacking the gravestones - that's a great little featurette.

Not bad

I've never really been a fan of dressups, unless they are uber detailed, with tons of features. This one only has one audio track, one choice of character to dress up and a cycle of basic backgrounds to choose from.

The next thing to make this into is some sort of 'comic book generator', where you can come up with a comic strip, allowing you to dress up the characters, flatten them and manipulate them to the ends of the strip.

Of course, this would require a lot of additional work from yourself to this end, as you would need extra character blanks, the ability to pose them and many more clothes and props.

Still, it's something to go on. You've got some great drawing styles for the Comic Strip, so why not give it a go?

Mercenary81 responds:

Thanks. I'm really just scratching the surface of action script, and I made this because it could technically be called a game with nothing but the bare minimum on action script. I wanted to add in a lot more to this but couldn't figure out how to fix some things to work, so i just accepted it the way it was. I had never even thought about that comic strip idea. That actually sounds like something I could do. Thanks for the review.

Needs work

I'd firstly try to concentrate on your skills at drawing and animating. If you use a smaller tool and zoom in, you'll get better control of your drawing tools. The animation is a decent quality, but the drawing style does let it down...

I'd seriously reconsider the use of paintbrushes for your writing - you can use fonts quite easily and it looks better. Those two adjustments alone will make such a difference to your games.

You've shown that you can utilise a reasonably challenging game interface, so the next step is to make the game look good. Maybe come up with some sort of movie about pogger instead, to practice the drawing skills required?

Concise

You've given budding flash artists exactly what they need to know in this little tutorial, provided that they want to use sprites :P

What I'd suggest is that you use more screenshots, enabling you to show the user exactly where everything is on the setup of flash. If they use it, then it has the most up to date thing that they could want for a flash movie construction.

I'd also reccomend that you import your wording into MS Word and run the spell checker program. There were a couple of errors, which the function would be able to pick up. Nothing major, but it all heps give a good impression ;)

Okay, I'll take your advice--I tried to proof read it myself, apparently that didn't work ha ha.
Thanks for your review.

Could have been so much more...

Ok, so you've made a decent start to a game, but this proves what commitment is needed to come up with a good game these days. The first thing I'd start you off with is the drawing style - if you can get an image you're happy with for your main character, then you'll want to finish the project, to show people how good your work is.

Zoom in a little and draw the characters with a slightly smaller tool, so that you gain a greater degree of control over the cursor. Your drawings will look better, as the lines won't look so wobbly. Look at more examples online of various carttons and pick astyle that suits you and looks good. If it's easier to draw, you won't feel so bad about doing it and you'll stay committed :)

Once the drawing is fixed, you'll want to write the rest of the plot. Trust me.

You know, I stopped shaving to think of something to write here. That worked out well.
