Simple, but enjoyable

I think that you've created quite a little challenge of a game here, that does require some skill and problem solving / memory to get past them. I think that there is a great potential for expanding upon this and having two or even three progressions of quests going at the same time. The number of coconuts should be able to be traded to the stall holder sooner, as bit-parts, just to keep inventory space free. You're able to have a fourth wall joke there as well, like "Nah, I trust you - I'm the only one who seems to want to give you coconuts at the moment, because everyone else wants something around here."

With the gameplay, you've done a good job of making it look like one of the more classic pixelated games, while adding your own artwork to the piece, so a good job there. I would consider expanding the game world, since those numbers of houses and relatively few screens didn't challenge enough, so people need to be given a good workout mentally with a game like this.

Keep working at it and I'm sure that you're pieces can get a lot better over the next few installments of the game.

Thank you for your review. I didn't really get the "fourth wall" joke, but I will improve the item trading in the next version.

Great stuff

I do have one issue with your games - they really do put a drain on the internet connections for lag bases, so I've got to do this when connected to the power and it's never good to swear at a machine in the office when you're supposed to be working, but because a game won't work for you :P

Now that I've got that rant over and done with, I must say, you've given us an absolute treat here. A great story, lovely animation and some pretty simple, but awesome gameplay. Your style for this makes the game simple to grasp but very difficult to master, which I do like about this. The only difference from Punk-o-Matic is really the artistry, which does make such a difference to the gameplay, as you start to try and stare out the machine, giving a really nasty challenge and making Epic Fail one of the easiest medals ever to achieve.

I think that the voice sounded more Russian than Greek, so I'm not sure what the angle was on that. Perhaps it was just me that hasn't heard many Greek accents, so I'll step back.

Perhaps a tutorial level could have been given at the start, since when she broke out, I was thrown in at the deep end, almost earning said medal before I'd even figured out the controls. With this in mind, some sort of extension of the story, or more probably a tutorial level that is available on the menu, in order to get us on the ground running, so to speak.

Not bad

A lot like "The Impossible Quiz", but it's something that you've clearly worked out well and complete with the song "Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky)", by Bill Conti as the accompaniment.

I think that perhaps I'll have to play it in more depth, as I've tried and didn't get very far, but a little trial and error will see you right in this respect. I can see that you've tried the trick answers floating around, so that does mean that you need to pay more attention to the surroundings than before.

When it comes to the scrolling text at the start, it went too fast for me. I'm normally quite a quick reader, so I was surprised to see it beat me to the top of the screen. Perhaps you could just slow it down a little and we could go from there.

TL;DR

Needs more programing work

Not a bad little game, but the controls are a little glitchy from time to time. I thinnk that you need some sort of control panel from where you can control the music, because it's not my thing there and I'd prefer it set to Metal or Rock. The simple solution is to have a selection of tracks from various genres as the backing for the game, with a selection and a mute option, so that people wishing to put their own music over the top, or be boring can do so.

On occasion, the ball has managed to take out three blocks, when it got nowhere near to third one. I'm not complaining, as it improves my score... no wait, it doesn't as there is no real score system for this. That's beside the point, since it takes out a block that the ball never touched, so something is messed up slightly with the physics of the game.

I think that the graphics could be improved - perhaps round the board off and give some powerups that drop down, like extensions of the board, multiball, additional lives, short duration score multipliers and the like. This would make everything look more like one of these mainstream flash games. I think that sorting a few minor tweaks out here and there will certainly make yours look a lot better and this will be reflected in the score that the flash gets.

I look forward to seeing what you can do along these lines.

Thanks for the review man, I really appreciate your suggestions.

An interesting game

I like the concept here and appreciate that the skill overall lies in thinking on your feet and shuffling the paddle around to catch the best cards at the right time, while keeping the ball aloft.

I think that I certainly need a mouse to play this game properly, as a touch pad is not the way forward, as my woeful scoring will stand testament to. Perhaps it would be beneficial to see additional lives at various scores, in order to keep the game rolling and some sort of person that you're playing against, to make even more money from, if your hand beats theirs.

Gets too hard, too quick

Sorry man, but this game is one that starts off as a great game, but then develops a serious flaw along the way - random letters. For trained touch typers like myself, this poses a major problem, since we're used to reading words off notes and typing away without a second glance at the keyboard, but when it comes to these random letter sequences in hard mode, it really just stops it from being an enjoyable game.

I think you should consider having other things in there for this game, like a system of increasingly longer cliffs to push the boss off and increasingly more difficult words - ones that aren't spelled phonetically, for example.

The limitation of knocking the boss off three times just went a little far, so perhaps with a progression to harder and harder, with an increasingly enraged boss, you'd have a better mechanism for playing this game.

Gets old quickly

I was expecting Adventure mode to have some sort of story behind it, so that you could at least get the feeling that you were evacuating soldiers from a real combat situation. Try reading up on scenarios like Black Hawk Down and the Vietnam War, where helicopters were the primary focus on troop movements - that should give you some ideas there.

Between missions, have some story about how the pilot is developing as a man, gaining experience and so forth. Perhaps harrowing accounts of how people in his chopper who you managed to save, but they'll never walk again, due to a leg being blown off, for example.

As for the gameplay, perhaps you need to have some guns mounted on the left and right, that take shots at enemies that emerge and fire. RPGs are the weapon of choice in both the above conflicts for removing helicopters, plus if you're ex-filtrating casualties, you need to hover, which makes you a sitting duck for a few seconds at least.

If you're in need of some more detailed ideas, I'll give you some more, just hook me up with a PM.

Thanks a lot for the reading suggestions. I really appreciate that. I really think a story of some sort would have been a great idea, thanks for the help and constructive criticism.

What, no sound?

A very basic piece of kit - this allows us only to create errors in Windows XP format, while they are accompanied by no sound, which really did take something away from the experience, to be honest.

Perhaps you could have done something like the Error Messages pieces, which showcase a selection of humorous messages, that you'd never see on a real computer, unless someone programmed the computer to replace the actual error messages with, which, while funny, would be such a pain to sort out.

No sound and no music made the piece quite boring and as a result, I think that there should be something said about that. The start of the piece is there, it just takes a while to get it firmed up and sorted, so that you've got a decent piece overall.

I understand the part about no music, but what would I put in for sounds? It's just an error generator.

Ministry of misinformation

A good looking flash, but your reviewing "quiz" was wrong - trust me, we take reviews that say "This is the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen" and are voted at 0 very seriously. Those things get removed and are most certainly abusive. Please do flag. I can say this, because I am a Review Moderator and know what I'm talking about.

Please check your flash for spelling errors - On the how popular quiz, my whistle level wasn't available, only Diety - not Deity.

There is a pretty good element to the stuff that has been done before - only rehashed with your own ideas over the top. Perhaps more blurb needs to be written before you work stuff like this out.

It was a shame that the animation quality level didn't remain the same after the main menu came in - you were doing so well until then.

Well, the review moderating is how I experienced it, and that was back in 2002-2007, when I got my whistles and stuff. Newgrounds has changed a lot since then, and most likely I'm all done for on this site.

Thanks for the long and comprehensive review, these don't come frequently. Good to see actual active moderators of the site taking their time to look at these things.

Again, thanks a lot.

Lovely graphics

A splendid game that I am sure will keep me amused for at least a good week or so, until I get enough of the medals to risk putting it down.

I love the way that you've set up the graphics here and it all looks so smooth - al lot better that other of your works that I've seen, I might add. The cartoon style is very nicely complimented by the child's voice for every time you Level up or die, because they sound so sad upon your demise with their "Oh no!"

I can see that you've also worked out a stirring plot, which really will keep the punters interested, along with a reasonably challenging set of medals to go with it - easy medals are all well and good, but too many people get them far too quickly these days, after all.

When it's all said and done, it'll be a shoe in for Daily Feature and probably a good runner for weekly first as well. 20 months for a game to be produced from start to finish is a long wait for a game, but certainly well worth it, as the Legend of Zelda interface for map walking, plus the CCTB style gameplay makes for a very enjoyable childish killfest.

Will we see a sequel to this piece? I'd certainly be in the queue for that, though hopefully not something that would taken another 20 months to make.

Thanks for the detailed review!

You know, I stopped shaving to think of something to write here. That worked out well.
