Simple and effective

Merry Xmas!

This is a very nice insight into the world of flies and their rather varied sense of humour they must posess when they hang around faeces all day. Love the fact that you considered it to be impossible for one fly to carry the pen, so you added a few more, as if it would make a difference :P Little details like that make all the comic difference :)

Are the flies regulars to your strip, or just a seasonal addition, while they appear to have joined a health club in the second one - you've given them access to the sauna, which has made me re-iterate that I will never use that particular facility in my own gym.

Just a quick idea for your project of videoing the production - have you considered using a program like Flash to record the action on the screen, to save you messing around setting up the video camera?

stik responds:

The flies are regulars. They have to be, they are part of the cow universe.

I didn't realise you could record using Flash. I'd be interested to hear how.

Ta very much for you insight.

Great Comic

This time-lapse documentary of yourself drawing your cartoon is a nice little featurette, complete with commentary as to how you perform the entire project. I really liked the way that you almost seem to race through the initial drawing, pausing only occasionally to tidy up a few loose ends.

The cartoon, considering that you only use about 6 colours is amazing. I don't particularly like how simple you make it look, because I'll never be able to a) draw that well, or b) make it look so easy.

You never answered this question in the commentary - how long does it take for you to come up with the concept of the cartoon and then draw it out? I know it takes about 25 minutes to draw the toon, but thinking time could certainly range from anything of about 5 minutes to hours, surely.

Maybe the next step for this would be to come up with a tutorial style layout of this and demonstrate exactly how you draw certain aspects of bovine comedy.

How did you record yourself doing it - did you mount the camera on a tripod, or did you have an accomplice holding the camera during filming?

stik responds:

Well, thinking time is hard to quantify. It just pings in my head and I jot it down in my sketch book. Then weeks even years later I look back and draw the sucker up.

It was a camera on a tripod over my shoulder. I used after effects to speed it all up :-)

Interesting

A wierd little story about the travels of a wheel, where it goes through various changes. I quite liked the Mario / Sonic version, as it looked really well thought out and animated. Then it went downhill a little until Pong came along :P

What I really shoudl point out is that when the wheel changes direction on the 'Donkey Kong' style scene, it is supposed to spin in reverse. Hopefully, you'll find out a way to sort that out for the next time ;)

uberdeluxe responds:

thanks for the positive feedback, but I'm afraid that there were no sonic mario or donkey kong parts(although i admit the one looks like donkey kong). What I was going for was:
1st scene is a rock wheel I guess in prehistoric times.
2nd scene is kirby. I thought it was a giveaway because at the end wheelie runs kirby over.
3rd scene is just realy a place with wood everywear and I agree on that scene I could have done more.
4th scene is, just like you said, pong. Not much to say about that.
5th scene is on the monitor of someones computer, i guess.

Saw it coming

So it's an old joke and as the guy walked across the road for the first time, i said 'splat', as it was that predicable. What I think you should have done is at least have the guy put the flag on his mail box down, since he has no mail and how is he supposed to know if he's got post when he looks next - remember, he'd not dead at this point :P

A decent animation, with the two angles leading up to him going outside. I'd like to see it being a little longer, maybe with something he really wants in the mailbox, just so it's even worse for him.

Maybe have the mailman come along and fill the mail box up with something for him, before he goes out?

Gnydsmelt responds:

Hmm, well we don't use that kind of mailbox where I live at so i couldn't have known that really :P

Well OH Well

THANKS FOR A GOOD REVIEW!

Innuendo laden marvel.

What a really amazing cartoon we have here - I've brushed past this series before and should really have spent more time watching to be honest. This one made me stop and take note.

I really love the attention to detail that you've put into the characters. While they don't move very much (similar to Matt Groening's characters), they are very effective in getting the point across.

I love the jokes which are covered in a big thick layer of innuendo, as "long have I watched things come out of his hole and soon they shall be mine!" had a particular impact with me and will remain with me for quite some time.

I can't wait for part 2, as this has been left in such a cliffhanging moment.

Scythemantis responds:

I love comments (on mine and anyone else's work) that go on more than a few sentences, thanks! I didn't even think about how little Groening's characters move during conversation until you mentioned it. Sometimes I'm just being lazy, but I've noticed how little real people actually move during speech compared to most cartoons.

Wigga kid and paedo short :P

I'm sorry if it seems offensive with my one line summary, but I think that it sums it up a treat. The kid sounds like he really wants to be Black and the old man has the sort of look like he wants to do something sinister to the kid, especially with the jelly :P

The animation is really simple, with only the kid's mouth movement really taking away from the whole essence of the thing, as it was the only animation that looked rushed and slightly out of place.

I loved the joke though and you did make it look quite nicely like a commercial for Smuckers Jelly. I could just eat some right now...

Skaijo responds:

Thanks for the review!

I have no issue with a one line summary, though I'm at a bit of an loss as I may have to look up what a "paedo" actually is. It's a pretty humorous way to start off a review. :D

+ I agree with your kids mouth movement looking as if it was rushed (it was). It'd be nice to hear some ideas from you on how to improve the quality of the lip-synching.

This is a good review. It's not as instructive or as helpful as it is fun to read. Still though, it's of a kind length considering how short this animation actually is. Good stuff.

8/10

Jason Lee?!

I must say, Adolf Hitler really does look quite bizzare when in his fancy dress as Exeggcutor. Now that he's hatched, he can make the most of his carribean hoilday and top up on his tan, as he's a little pale :P

Of course, the pineapple does make him look a lot like former football flop, Jason Lee (Please tell me you know of him), because comparing the military tactics of Hitler to the Goalscoring abilites of Jason Lee may not neccessarrily be accurate, but it's still good for a laugh

AfroUnderscoreStud responds:

Jason Lee happens to have played for my favourite and second favourite football team. :P

Charlton Athletic and Boston United respectively.

You know, I stopped shaving to think of something to write here. That worked out well.
